Types of Occupational Illnesses
Whether caused by gradual wear or through exposure to particularly hazardous products, work-related illnesses can stem from any number of sources. Common causes may include the work environment, the nature of the work, and the tools and products used. There are many different types of illnesses that could be picked up in the workplace, though some are more common than others.
Skin Disorders
If an occupation regularly exposes workers to harmful irritants like chemicals, gasses, or even the sun’s ultraviolet rays, it can lead to serious skin disorders. Some common issues include rashes, hives, or eczema, but could also consist of more serious diseases like dermatitis and skin cancer.
- Dermatitis: Repeated exposure to irritating cleaners and solvents, or even minimal contact with hazardous chemicals, can lead to severe skin issues. The most common, dermatitis, is characterized by a red, painful rash triggered by an allergic reaction or other irritation. Workers who often come into contact with harsh chemicals may experience a severe reaction, resulting in dermatitis, or workers constantly touching water may develop it over time.
- Skin Cancer: One of the most common forms of cancer, skin cancer is especially prevalent in workers who are regularly exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Construction workers or other outdoor laborers are especially susceptible. If you notice any abnormal growths or painful skin tags or moles, visit your doctor immediately.
Respiratory Problems
Workers who are regularly required to use toxic chemicals and gasses could experience serious respiratory damage. Whether working amid polluted air, inhaling toxic particles, or breathing in other dangerous substances, lung problems can be very serious.
Common respiratory problems include:
- Tuberculosis
- Asthma
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Hearing Loss
Some workers, particularly those around loud machinery or in large factories, are regularly exposed to noisy environments. These loud working conditions can be very damaging to a person’s hearing over time. In some instances, a singularly traumatic experience, like an explosion, could damage a person’s hearing beyond repair. Even with protective gear, someone could sustain partial or complete hearing loss when exposed to loud working conditions.
Musculoskeletal Disorders
Workers who are physically active often put more wear-and-tear on their bodies than most other people, sometimes causing damage to the musculoskeletal system. Nurses, attendants, and other workers who are constantly on the move are usually the most common sufferers. Musculoskeletal disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome and rotator cuff tendinitis can be extremely painful and sometimes prevent workers from continuing in their chosen profession.
